The West Washington County Family Literacy Collaborative consists of two programs:  Adelante Mujeres and PODER.  We are an Even-Start funded program under the administration of the Oregon Child Development Coalition. We follow the Even Start model for family literacy which consists of  the four components listed below. The description under each component reflects our Collaborative as a whole.  (See individual program pages for description of each program).

Other Even Start programs may vary in how they offer these components, depending on the needs of their participants.

Adult Education (AE)

Early Childhood Education (ECE)

 

Development of the cognitive, physical, language, and social skills necessary to succeed in school. Development of the first language and appreciation of native culture. Staff  trained in Early Childhood Education Based on Creative Curriculum www.teachingstrategies.com Reading readiness activities for preschool children. Homework and enrichment activities for school-aged children at the evening site.

Interactive Literacy Activities (ILA)

Parents join their children in the preschool or infant/toddler classroom where they have the opportunity to apply their understanding of language development while interacting with their children. A combination of child-directed and parent-directed activities, in order to acknowledge cultural differences in parenting approaches. Opportunities for parents to increase awareness of how children learn and how to support their children's social-emotional, physical, cognitive, and language development. Recognize and share cultural heritage with children.

Parent Education and Support (PES)

For Parents:

• Recognize role as child's first teacher and take an active part in child's education.
• Engage in home literacy activities with children that reflect an understanding of early cognitive development and the value of an enriched family life.
• Use English to communicate effectively in the community in order to realize goals and meet basic needs for self and family.
• Set and track individual and family goals.
• Solve problems and make informed decisions in order to realize goals and strengthen self-esteem.
• Use a positive approach to child guidance and establish effective communication in the family.
• Demonstrate leadership and advocate for self and others.

For Children:

• Enter kindergarten with the cognitive and social skills necessary to succeed in the public schools.
