The class:  I tried these activities with two classes, one a mixed level class ranging from beginning literacy to low advanced and the other a multi-level class ranging from low intermediate to high advanced.  These lessons were part of what became a quarter long unit dealing with health and nutrition.  Student attendance in both classes is variable.

Materials:

Comments:  I would say that on the whole the health unit went quite well.  One thing I liked about it was how we were able to bring in many guest speakers, mostly nursing students from our nursing program.  Although the Ss didnt always understand everything it was good exposure for them and they generally got the gist of the presentations.  For the most part the students found the unit useful information for them.  At the end of the unit I gave them the following questionnaire (also in Spanish) to the right are the percentage of student responses in blue.  18 students were surveyed.

Activities:

Day 1

Ss were pre-taught key vocabulary to understand the Pyramid Plus with a matching and sentence completion activity (see appendix 1).

Ss were each given a Pyramid Plus and were asked to preview what they saw in it (ie. ID the foods they saw, the organization of the chart, the star rating system for foods, etc)

Ss then were given a handout with questions relating to the Pyramid Plus questions dealt with serving size, comparisons, recommended daily allowance and healthy choices. Reviewed answers as a class (appendix 2).

Ss were given the assignment to bring in a food package of something they typically eat from home

Day 2

Reviewed what we learned from the Pyramid Plus exercise

Ss were then given a food packaging label (nobody brought one from home, in anticipation of this I brought a variety myself).

Ss categorized their food item according to the Pyramid Plus as well as healthy and unhealthy choices.

Ss then completed a worksheet for their food item dealing with such things as serving size, total fat, saturated fat, etc.  Note these vocabulary items had been pre-taught and reviewed prior to this days lesson) (appendix 3)

Ss then orally shared their information with the class
