Greetings All,
I hope you have had a relaxing summer. Mine has seen fits and starts with some down times followed by frantic rushes. Such is life I suppose. I know some of you have had challenges this summer and I appreciate the email updates. "What does not kill us makes us stronger."
Three things:
1. I have established this dedicated LEA email address (lea422lennox@yahoo.com) for you so I can be more responsive to you. Too often last year your emails got entangled with the rash of others and I was late in following up with you. With this dedicated email address, I can try to be more responsive. If we have any dangling issues I may have missed, please let me know.
2. IMPORTANT: Part I of your Culminating Project is to be uploaded by September 15. I am sure you have that wrapped up already but I wanted to remind you of the due date.
3. Our next face-to-face (or face-to-satellite) on October 29 is on Adult Learner Persistence. In that workshop we will explore a variety of strategies related to helping students persist in class. From those strategies you might find ones that you can pilot test in Part II of your Culminating Project.
Please add this new email address to your contacts and let me know when I can help in any way.
I look forward to reading your Part I reports and I look forward to seeing you in October.
Take care. Let me know when I can help.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!Good afternoon!!Our next Leadership Academy meeting will be April 21 - 22, 2009. Per the last meeting, folks expressed an interest in meeting for a few hours the evening before the Teleconference. I have reserved the OPI 1300 Conference Room on April 21 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. It is reserved for the day on April 22 as well.I tried to get a block of sleeping rooms at Red Lion but DPHHS has their entire complex taken for April 22. I managed to get a block of rooms at the Fairfield Inn, 2150 11th Avenue (just down the street from Red Lion). Please call them ASAP at 449-9944 to reserve and guarantee a room in the block. The block is under my name and the confirmation numbers run from 88843 to 88852. When you call, they'll give you one of the confirmation numbers and replace my name with yours. If you would like to participate in an interim conference call on March 1 at 12 Noon, please email me. I need to know how many lines I need and will call and get what we need. I'll email you the numbers and passwords.Thank you!CarolHow to Access Interim Activities
Look on the orange card stock “Points of Contact” handout that we got at the Leadership Academy. Directly under the chart of contacts, there is something called “Technology Tips” (with a photo of a computer screen besides it). It has the address for the library:
1. Open http://leadershipliteracy.net/.
2. Click on the link that is circled in red on the picture of the front page.
3. Access LEA Participant Library
4. Scroll down to 08-09 Training Materials Year 1
5. Choose Self Assessment Interim Activity
6. The form can then be saved as a Word document, filled out and saved on your computer.
7. Finally, go back to LEA software, chose your team and upload!
Good luck. Call me if these directions aren’t clear (823-6356)

I have always dreaded welcoming people to orientation and saying I am sorry but one of the things we are going to do as a part of orientation is test you. Listening to Lennox share what West Virginia found when they did Student forums and the adjustments they made to their orientation as a result inspired me to talk with our staff about making changes as well. The Missoula ABLE staff was excited about making a significant change to our orientation process. We are in the midst of making the changes now and hope to implement them in time for winter quarter. Testing won’t be a part of the first contact students have. Instead they are going to get to learn about their learning styles and preferences and how to use those in the classroom.

Montana was fortunate to have Lennox McLendon onsite to host the first Montana/Idaho LA meeting. The self-assessment piece should be a very interesting one for the Billings staff to complete since the staff has several new members. Looking at what we do well and want to improve upon will be good for all of us.
Norene Peterson, Billings Adult Education Center
The first meeting of the Leadership Academy demonstrated the commitment and willingness of the participants to share their time and expertise to improve the delivery of adult education across the state.
